Nate Ferguson (he/him) is a PhD student in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies with interests in dramaturgy, theatre in translation, and German studies. His work centers around the German Expressionists, early Absurdists, and the Weimar and post-war avant-garde in general, especially those artists who were forced into exile due to persecution. In addition to studying the subject matter for its potential relevance to the current-day theatre landscape, Nate also translates the plays in question, especially if they are previously untranslated or if the author warrants greater international study and appreciation.
He is an alumnus of both the MFA programs at the Iowa Playwrights Workshop (2022) and Translation Workshop (2023), where for his theses, he produced translations of Peter Weiss plays that had not yet been brought into English, while doing active work as a production dramaturg and sitting on textbook and season selection committees.
Nate’s activity as a professional dramaturg includes both the development of new plays and production dramaturgy for their premieres, as well as work on new runs of existing plays, including at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre and Collaboraction.
