Gabriela C. Yepes-Rossel

Gabriela is a theater and film writer, director, and researcher. She holds a BA in Communications at the University of Lima, Peru, and an MFA in Radio, TV, and Film at the University of Texas at Austin. She has worked in television, film, and theater as a producer, director, writer, and dramaturg. Her first play, The Therapist, about the prolonged effects of political violence on women, won the 2017 Sala de Parto Playwriting Award, the 2020 Luces Award for Best Peruvian Playwright, and was presented in Lima, Bogotá, and London. In 2020, she won two grants from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture to study women’s film practice in the 20th Century and write a film screenplay set during the times of Peru’s Internal Armed Conflict. At UW, Gabriela is researching Andean syncretic drama and performance from a gendered and decolonial perspective and is particularly interested in the dramaturgical shape and content of Colonial and Republican theater. She hopes to transform her findings into theoretical and practical applications for alternative theater training and pedagogy that could be integrated into the university theater curricula.
