Book recommendation: True Biz by Sara Nović

The Capital Times asked UW-Madison professors about their favorite books of the year. I recommended True Biz by Sara Nović. The book is, at its heart, a coming-of-age story of a deaf girl, Charlie, who grew up without access to a signed language so that she would ‘blend in’ more easily and who, at the beginning of the book, joins a Deaf community as somewhat of an outsider.  Here’s a link to the NYT review of the book, which concludes

“Great stories create empathy and awareness more effectively than facts do, and this important novel should — true biz — change minds and transform the conversation.”
