Summer just flew by. With several projects submitted for review, it is now time to wait for the feedback. The last summer project to complete was a presentation at the 8th Conference of the International Society for the Linguistics of English in beautiful Santiago de Compostela. We were reminded that grammar has been studied at the University of Santiago de Compostela for over 500 years. In Europe, English Linguistics is a more clearly defined field than in the US (many English Departments are split in the middle — 50% linguistics/50% literature & culture), and it’s fun to be at a conference where every presentation is about English. Many, many papers touched on the opportunities and challenges AI presents to our field. There was also a consensus that linguists need to engage more with the public and cannot assume that what interests them the most about English is what interests the public.
